Istanbul Residents - Gulhane, Istanbul- Cats are everywhere in Istanbul, and very comfortable. We saw this little house at the entrance to Gülhane Park. We could not figure out whether it started as a pigeon house and was taken over by cats, but now it is a cat house. The population of Turkey is mostly Muslim. There is Islamic lore that encourages tolerance of cats. One popular story is about a cat which thwarted a poisonous snake that had approached the Prophet Muhammad. In another one, the…

Pompeii, Italy. This history is awesome. The volcano erupted and the lava covered the whole village.

In the year 79 AD, Italy& Mt. Vesuvius erupted with superheated ash that rained fiery death on several Roman cities nearby. But none was hit harder than vacation town Pompeii, which was buried in a thick layer of broiling ash in a matter of seconds.

The mass killing of Ottoman Armenians is today widely recognized, both within and outside scholarly circles, as an act of genocide. What is less well known is that it took place within a broader context of Ottoman violence against minority groups during and after the First World War. Among those populations decimated were the indigenous Christian Assyrians (also known as Syriacs or Chaldeans) who lived in the borderlands of present-day Turkey, Iran, and Iraq.

Victory Blvd looking Northwest. To all my friends who aren't on or near Staten Island, this is how close we are to Manhattan We are a part of NYC, YET we have a flourishing population of turkeys, pheasants, raccoons, opossums various types of birds, squirrels and deer. The island is also filled with parks and a large Greenbelt cuts through the middle. We definitely have the best of both worlds.

Thoughts on my moustache? Grow a beard around it?

Sagalassos fountain (Turkey, ca. 160-180 AD). Located roughly 110 km north of Antalya, the ruins of the city extend 2.5 km from west to east and 1.5 km from north to south. The excavations at Sagalassos are now among the largest archaeological projects in the Mediterranean. Sagalassos was a prosperous city for over 1000 years, from early Hellenistic times until it was struck by a devastating earthquake in the 7th century AD when the city was abandoned.
