This remarkable 18th-century wax anatomical model comes from the Javier Puerta Museum, and was recently on display as part of the “Arte y Carne” Exhibition this past May in Madrid. It’s similar to one I posted a few days ago, but this one depicts twins. Wax models like this were used for teaching anatomy to medical students at a time when few bodies were available for dissection. They very much represent the merging of science and art which characterized the Enlightenment. #histmed…

First gather your materials: 1 plastic bottle, water, rubbing alcohol, food coloring, 1 clear straw, and modeling clay. Start by adding equal parts tap water and rubbing alcohol to fill the bottle a ¼ way up. Then, add a few drops of red food coloring. Place the straw into the bottle but make sure it doesn’t touch the bottom. Seal the bottle with clay around the straw, but don’t cover the straw. Now to test it! Heat the mixture with your hands and watch the liquid expand up into the straw!
