Campaign launched for Britain's first black army officer to be honoured with Military Cross for bravery during the First World War

J. R. R. Tolkien, Second Lieutenant in the Lancashire Fusiliers, 1916. Tolkien served as a signals officer at the Somme, participating in the Battle of Thiepval Ridge & the subsequent assault on the Schwaben Redoubt. In late October of 1916 Tolkien came down with trench fever, a disease carried by the lice which were common in the dugouts and was invalided home to England in November of the same year.  “Gentlemen are rare among the superiors, and even human beings rare indeed.”

Tolkien, English writer, poet & university professor, author of "The Hobbit" & "Lord of the Rings." He is here aged 24 in in military uniform, while serving in the British Army during World War I.

The last WWII soldier: didn't surrender until 1974! I remember reading about this in People magazine. His mom was still alive at the time and the photo of she and him were enough to make you cry.
