USS Kearsarge, a Mohican-class sloop-of war, is best known for her defeat of the Confederate commerce raider CSS Alabama during the American Civil War. The Kearsarge was the only ship of the United States Navy named for Mount Kearsarge in New Hampshire.

In 1864 two ships began fighting five miles from the French coast. They were the Alabama and Kearsarge, bringing the American Civil war to the high seas.

Able Seacat Simon (fair use) @Briana Gordon Simon was a heroic seacat who received a medal for his war efforts. There's also a short YouTube video of him, which I wasn't able to pin.
