Spice box W. R., London ca. 1602 - silver. The intricate ornament on this scallop-shaped box reflects the late Elizabethan taste for Antwerp Mannerism; indeed, many specialized workers active in London’s goldsmiths’ trade came from the Spanish Netherlands. Although shell-shaped boxes such as this one are sometimes referred to as spice boxes, according to early seventeenth-century inventories, they were used for serving sugar, an expensive delicacy.

This beautiful Spanish map depicts the principal regions of Europe in play during the Eighty Years War (1568-1648) in which the Netherlands rebelled against the Spanish Hapsburg rule ultimately forming the independent Dutch Republic. An interesting touch is an illustration of burning fleet at the top of the map in the North Sea. Could be a reference to the Spanish Armada which was destroyed in 1588 in an unrelated action against the English during the same period.

Spanish Netherlands (Spanish: Países Bajos españoles; Dutch: Spaanse Nederlanden) was the collective name of States of the Holy Roman Empire in the Low Countries, held in personal union by the Spanish Crown (Habsburg Spain) from 1581 to 1714. This region comprised most of modern Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as parts of northern France and Germany.

The Low Countries were the main theater during the Nine Years War.
