Standard roses - if you want to keep the ball on stick shape, obviously cut off any bits that don't conform to that shape. Always cut off dead wood, and remove thin stems, bits that cross over each other closely and tangles in the middle of the ball.

Standard roses are no different to ordinary bush roses - other than the fact that they are on a long stem. This presents a few added problems with growing standard roses.
