St. Genevieve, MO - shopping and history.  Founded around 1735 by Canadien habitants and migrants from settlements in the Illinois Country just east of the Mississippi River, Ste. Geneviève is the oldest permanent European settlement in Missouri. It was named for Saint Genevieve (who lived in the fifth century AD), the patron saint of Paris. While most residents were of French-Canadian descent, many of the founding families had been in the Illinois Country for two or three generations.

Jacques Guibourd House in Ste. Genevieve, MO; was constructed in 1806 in the poteaux-sur-sole style. The house also has hand sewn walls and a double pitched roof. This house in particular is important to the National Register Site because it is the only historic house in town where the visitor can view a "close up" on this type or architecture.
