Sky Phenomena: Sun Dogs: "...an atmospheric phenomenon that creates bright spots of light in the sky, often on a luminous ring or halo on either side of the sun. Sundogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, 22° distant and at the same distance above the horizon as the sun, and in ice halos. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are not always obvious or bright. Sundogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the sun is…

Sun Dogs ~ are made of a large family of halos, created by light interacting with ice crystals in the atmosphere. Sun Dogs are best seen and most conspicuous when the Sun is close to the horizon.

|| Sundogs, or parhelion, are made commonly of plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high and cold cirrus clouds or, during very cold weather, by ice crystals drifting in the air at low levels. These crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them. If the crystals are randomly oriented, a complete ring around the sun is seen. But often, as the crystals sink through the air they become vertically aligned, so sunlight is refracted horizontally — in this case, sundogs are…

Atmospheric phenomenon called a sundog aka parhelion aka phantom sun when patches of colored light appear on the left and right sides of the sun creating a luminous halo.

Unusual Sky - Once, about three years ago, I kissed my husband off to work and as he went, I happened to look up. Our sky had one of these going on, and it was my first and only time seeing one. It's beyond spectacular, and I almost missed it.

I think this thing is called a Sun Dog? I'm not totally sure… but it was a really cool phenomenon that I had not seen before. I suppose it happens when there is a little bubble of wet, humid air floating around… it definitely was not raining and this whole part of the desert in Utah was as dry as a bone. - Utah, USA - Photo from #treyratcliff Trey Ratcliff at http://www.StuckInCustoms.com
