This is real psychology. It's called Labeling Theory. 'If someone is considered to be something by everyone else, they will see themselves as nothing but that label, and will end up living to that standard.'

The duct tape and wetsuit thing is false because a zombie's jaw strength is much higher than a humans, because the lack the natural instinct keeping your muscles from destroying themselves. A zombie could easily bite through duct tape and a wetsuit.
