In 1908, Dr Nils Johanson (a Swedish immigrant and surgeon) and 10 of his fellow Swedish-Americans sold bonds to open Seattle's Swedish Hospital. Swedish was founded on June 1, 1910. In 1980, it absorbed Doctors Hospital and Seattle General Hospital. In 1992, Ballard Community Hospital became part of Swedish. Providence Seattle Medical Center.
