In the last entry we looked at your standard valet trays, which sit horizontal. But lately on Etsy there's been a rash of designs going vertical, either to provide better visibility or take up less tabletop real estate. They presumably evolved from simple phone holders like this one or that

To shape a curved tabletop I made recently, I could have used a jigsaw that made less-than-furniture-quality cuts, or my bandsaw with its tiny table. I opted for the bandsaw, but only after coming up with the outboard support system shown. The support board glides easily on the roller stands so I was able to focus on the accuracy of the cut instead of overcoming the board-on-board friction. A clamp at each end of the support board keeps the whole thing from accidentally rolling too far and…

How to pocket-screw without a jig First, with a Forstner bit, drill 3⁄4″ holes 1⁄4″ deep in the bottom of the tabletop, where shown. Then, placing the tip of a 5⁄32″ bit in the corner of each hole, drill a shank hole at a 35° angle. To guide the bit, bandsaw a bevel on a piece of scrap, as shown. At assembly time, use the shank holes as guides to drill pilot holes into the legs. Then fasten the tabletop to the legs with ordinary flathead wood screws.—the WOOD® shop
