The "Tariff of Abominations" was a protective tariff passed by the Congress of the United States on May designed to protect industry in the northern United States. Enacted during the presidency of Andrew Jackson. It set a tax on of all imported goods.
This is a political cartoon depicting the Nullification Crisis. The Nullification Crisis was when the US Government put on some tariffs but South Carolina declared them unconstitutional and unenforceable.
The Tariff of Abominations was also the Tariff of It was proposed by Henry Clay, and it was supposed to protect industry in the Northern United States. It was thought to be an abomination in the South because it did nothing but hurt the region.
