The Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens, William Thackeray's Vanity Fair, George Eliot, and Thomas Hardy. Robert Browning and Alfred Lord Tennyson were Victorian England's most famous poets. The last decades of the 19th century brought significant works for the theatre by Gilbert & Sullivan, George Bernard Shaw and Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest in 1895.
