American designer Paul Rand (1914–1996) defined design as a unified activity, based on analysis and governed by imagination. Throughout his lengthy career – in which he created some of world’s most successful and recognizable logos such as those for IBM, UPS, and ABC – his design work was governed by fundamental principles such as beauty, intelligence, repetition, symbol, and humor. He set new standards for graphic design.

_Elle_ has released a fully embroidered cover for its September issue as part of the magazine’s redesign. Created by Claire Barrett, founder of London-based embroidery company "Hawthorne & Heaney":http://www.londonhandembroidery.com/, the magazine cover is a minimal ivory-white fabric with stitched logo. The artwork is simply a sewn-on patch, similar to a clothing label, stating “Now what?” in embroidered capitalised type alongside the bar code.

This branding design makes sure that in every product and presentation of the company, there is at least one form of its logo. The appearance of the "x" doesn't even have to be full. It can be partially shown, and because of the simple, yet recognizable logo, the audience is able to assume what the product is.
