A view from a war Transport report into street layouts. A view of one of the many 'back to back' housing streets typified by Coronation St and that would, often quite rightly, be condemned as slums and cleared in the post-war period. Bad as they often were some of the housing that replaced these streets hasn't weathered well - and has now been, in turn, demolished. Some of these terraces that were 'renovated' have at times kept some sense of community - but we forget how basic these houses…

Here's the Apollo in 1950 showing 'Fury at Furnace Creek' starring Victor Mature. The Apollo is still standing although you might know it better as a theatre and live music venue nowadays. Opened in 1938, the Apollo Theatre was designed by architects Peter Cummings and Alex M. Irvine. The interior decorations were carried out by noted interior designer Mollo & Egan with the Holophane lighting designed by R. Gillespie Williams.
