There are many edges within this photo. There are edges is the sky, on the pier and on the body shape of the man.

This reminds me of the Series of Unfortunate Events series by Lemony Snicket. I can just see Violet, Clause and Sunny sitting on this pier. Not Really Sure why, but I can -Leading Lines-

The edges are really bold in the fore ground due to the fog behind. Although less clear, my eye is still drawn up the foggy cliff edge to the figure ontop.

Environmental- In the small town of Holcomb, its size was emphasized through the statement that everyone knew each other to the point that front doors were kept unlocked. The town was one small wasteland.
