Three or four years ago, London was full of fixed gear bikes. But, according to bike shop owners around the UK capital, that particular wave has broken and rolled back. The London Fixed Gear and Single Speed Forum said they had the most ever users at one time back in August 2011. So have tastes changed and has function prevailed over form for all but the most dedicated commuters and bicycle couriers?

Fixie" is short for “fixed gear,” which is a slang term for bicycles that have drivetrains with one gear that's fixed to the rear wheel so that you cannot coast and must continue pedaling whenever the bike's moving. Fixies are among the most simple of bicycles because they don't require derailleurs, shifters, double- or triple-chainring cranksets, or, in some circumstances, even brakes.

A fixed gear bicycle doesn't have a freewheel (don't worry, they're not all as weird-looking as the one in the picture that illustrates this post - I just couldn't resist that funny-looking basket). This means that when the rear wheel turns, the pedals turn. The rear sprocket is screwed directly into the rear wheel's hub, so there's no way around it.

With their colourful, customisable wheels and lightweight frames, fixed-gear bikes make a bright addition to the hordes of traditional bikes in Chinese cities. "Fixies" as they are known for short are becoming increasingly popular among cyclists in China, both as a way to keep fit and a fashion accessory.

That address takes you to a typical xiaoqu. There are no signs or any information about a bicycle shop, but after asking around with the neighbors I tracked him down at a tiny flat on the ground floor of one of the blocks. He has two small rooms, both crammed with bicycle parts and half-built bikes. He sleeps in the shed behind the house, if he sleeps at all, which I somewhat doubt from the look of him.
