Climbing plants that love the shade | The Times Rosa Alberic Barbier

Climbing plants that love the shade

Climbing plants can do the important job of breaking up the garden visually around and above eye level. The smaller the garden, the more vital they are, and the plot will feel more spacious and

Claire Austin - highly fragrant climber for north facing wall

Claire Austin

This vigorous, upright rose makes a very good climber in both beauty and performance. It bears pleasingly cupped, pale lemon buds which gradually open to large, creamy white flowers, the outer petals perfectly arranged in concentric circles. They have a strong myrrh fragrance with dashes of meadowsweet, vanilla and heliotrope. The growth is strong and particularly healthy, and it is clothed in attractive matt green foliage. Named for the daughter of David Austin Senior. David?Austin, 2007.

Love this planting combo - especially the Alliums!

Liriope muscari - An extremely useful plant, which will tolerate a range of conditions including dry shade and drought. Dark green, blade-like leaves provide year-round interest and in autumn, just as other flowers are beginning to fade, vibrant, long-lasting wands of deep violet flowers rise above the foliage. Lily-turf is perfect for edging small, shady spaces - the broad grass-like foliage contrasts beautifully with large leaved plants, or for planting in groups beneath deciduous shrubs.

Geranium psilostemon - This vigorous Armenian cranesbill produces a mass of shallow cup-shaped, vivid magenta flowers with black centres and veins from early to late summer. It quickly forms loose hummocks of deeply cut, mid-green leaves, which turn a fabulous shade of red in autumn. An excellent plant for the middle of the border.

Geranium 'Johnson's Blue' makes soft mounds of green leaves from mid-spring followed by blue flowers in in early summer. Cut back after flowering and you will get a second flush later in the summer.
