The Mariinsky Theatre (Russian: Мариинский театр) a historic theatre of opera + ballet in St Petersburg, Russia. Opened 1860, it became the pre-eminent music theatre of late 19th century Russia, where many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky & Rimsky-Korsakov received their premier's. Through most of the Soviet era, it was known as the Kirov Theatre. Today, the Mariinsky is home to the Mariinsky Ballet, Mariinsky Opera + Mariinsky Orchestra.
