The asymmetry of the glove led me to introduce different lengths to each sleeve and pleat of the dress playing with the idea of the five different finger lengths of a glove translated to a dress. Perfect circle and deep U shaped cuts on silk Dupion have been introduced and covered-up by a fine layer of elegant transparent silk organza that achieves to deliver this graphic effect of patchwork with a sharply modern update.
The shape of the dress derives from the surrealistic notion that the human female body represents a reverse human hand; the index and middle finger are the feet, and the little finger and thumb are the hands. From this notion, the gloves, and more particularly the leather ones, are a way of dressing.
The submission for the Liberty 2016 fashion competition is a modern graphic, retro shaped, mini flapper dress with sharp contemporary updates on a vintage theme following the seductive concept of “more is more”. It is a visual feast of bold, delicious colours and precious finishing details!
This attractive notion of modern, sporty, coquetry appearance made me travel back to the early 1920s where coquetry, comfort and understated luxury of materials were interwoven with everyday life and fabrics were put together with smart sewing techniques. The lavish period of the Great Gatsby, Jean Lanvin, Tamara de Lempica and Art-Gout-Beaute led to the idea of a dropped waist, and a confortable, mini pleated, flapper dresses from a Vintage redux realm.
My inspiration comes from the appearance, construction and beauty of leather driving gloves. The excellent combination of sophisticated and luxurious practicality and the allowance of the hand to not be fully covered as ordinary gloves do, conveys a modern, sporty, coquetry, sexy and powerful feminine appeal
