Nolan's latest film Dunkirk depicts the evacuation of 400,000 allied soldiers from the beaches of Dunkirk, France upon being surrounded by the german army. Nolan structured the story to be told from three perspectives: on the beach with soldiers awaiting evacuation, at sea with yachtsmen part of a fleet of civilian boats ordered to travel to Dunkirk and rescue the soldiers, and in the air with a RAF spitfire squadron ordered to provide air support for the operation.
