The oldest photo I've seen of the Packhorse Bridge. Looks like very early - or maybe even before then. Old Photos, Vintage Photos, Peak District, Landscape Photos, Natural Beauty, Past, Bridge, National Parks, Landscapes

The Packhorse Bridge - The Goyt Valley

The small packhorse bridge which stood for centuries in the heart of Goyt's Bridge has miraculously survived. Though not many people who stroll past it may realise it.

Two elderly ladies sit on the Packhorse Bridge. I hadn't realised there must have been a bench seat up here. It looks a great place to sit and enjoy the view! Peak District, Bench Seat, Derbyshire, Old Photos, Great Places, Natural Beauty, City Photo, Past, Bridge

This wonderful illustration is featured on the cover of Gerald Hancock's 'Goyt Valley Romance'. It looks like an early postcard. It's interesting comparing it with photos of the stepping stones taken at a similar time. The little girl is way out of scale. It wasn't quite as precarious as it looks. Artistic license! Old OS maps show a ‘Coal Pit’ between Errwood Hall and Castedge Farmhouse. The entrance to the mine has long since been blocked and is now covered by thick undergrowth.

Another photo of the Packhorse Bridge. This looks like it could have been taken soon before the houses were demolished - maybe the early Peak District, 1930s, Natural Beauty, Past, Bridge, National Parks, Landscapes, Survival, Houses

A great photo of someone waving from the small suspension bridge which once spanned the narrowest part of Fernilee reservoir. Great Photos, Old Photos, Suspension Bridge, Peak District, Natural Beauty, National Parks, History, World, Nature

The suspension bridge - The Goyt Valley

I’ve always been curious about the small, picturesque suspension bridge shown in some old photos of the valley, wondering when it was built, what happened to it, and where it was situated.

It took me a while but I finally managed to discover some facts about the history of this small and attractive suspension bridge which once spanned Fernilee Reservoir. Suspension Bridge, Peak District, Derbyshire, Tower Bridge, Old Photos, Natural Beauty, National Parks, Black And White, History

The old packhorse bridge. It's the first photo I've seen showing a small wooden bridge over the ford - for when walkers didn't fancy their luck over the stepping stones.
