On my 26th birthday, I visited a teak temple in Mandalay. As I crept around the building, inspecting carvings and admiring the gardens, a young monk invited me inside to watch the others pray. Mandalay, Myanmar (2014)

As the midday sun rose, I hid under the shelter of a market stall and watched a friend have his face painted with thanaka. This traditional yellow paste is said to cool the skin and protect against sun damage. Bagan, Myanmar (2014)
