Skinned 2017. Oil on canvas. One of my favourite paintings. When I was painting it I was thinking about the false exteriors that we present to blend in fit look comfortable. Behind the eyes there might be nothing recognisable a darkness that we cant reveal. Out on my baby. Its a 1985 Honda Magna V45 700c. Its almost 35 years old and has only done 14k Miles - 400 miles a year. The model first came out when I was 10 years old. I remember the adverts. It was a turning point in the evolution of bikes and the inline 4 cylinder. Great Japanese technology. This thing is 6 speed 80hp and will do 0-60 in around 3.5 seconds. Hanging with Dante. Can you spot my influences yet? If you look askance at a Rossetti the light solarises off the paint application and reverses sections out. The image transforms conventional colour representation disappears. The gloss and matt of the medium can be seen. The brushwork direction finds a new equilibrium. Its as if there is another secret painting inside. Its a moment thats only experienced in the flesh of looking at the painting as a 3 dimensional object made of earthly material. I had a massive crush on #Madonna in the #1980s. I made my first proper portrait at 14 drawn from this photo series of Madonna. Shes around 26/27(?) in this. Looking back at the photo it seems very gender-queer the line of her jaw is very square the muscle in her shoulder; all seems to be masculine. With the context of now and hindsight the makeup is exaggerated and vibrates with trans/drag references.
