LizzyClips Design: Finished | Vintage HST Quilt

Finished | Vintage HST Quilt

One of the things I enjoy doing in my spare time is scouring second-hand shops for hidden treasures. Along with the furniture gems I've uncovered, I've also had some success in collecting vintage textiles. After accumulating a decent collection, I decided it was time to finally put those fabrics to use in a quilt! I kept the design quite simple - HST units, pairing vintage with solid white. The blocks consist of 4 matching HSTs to unify the otherwise incoherent mix of colour and pattern. The…

Exuberant Color: Miscellany............... (And another setting for HSTs ☺)

My straight stitch machine has new lighting, a Mother's Day present. I had to take the photo in semi darkness or the lights didn't show up. They are little LED lights on a sticky backed strip. For anyone who wants the technical info here is the instruction sheet. I had 2.5 hours of TV watching last night so I sewed some of the star blocks with the 2" finished triangle squares. I'll keep making them until I get tired of them and then decide what I am going to do with them. I picked my first…

crazy mom quilts: my crayon challenge quilt

my crayon challenge quilt

Earlier this year, the Minneapolis MQG held a crayon challenge. Each person that participated had to pick between 2-4 crayons (blindly) from a brown paper bag. The directive was to make something (anything) using those colors, with permission to add one other color to the mix. I was pretty pleased with the crayons that I drew from the bag. I was able to make my quilt top entirely from the stash, which is always a great feeling! The colors I chose were violet red, cerise, sea green and sky…

Hope: making HSTs using a ruler rather than making multiple blocks

Farmer's Wife Sampler - Whirlpool

Lots of triangles in this week's block, and if you've been reading my Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt posts you'll probably be able to guess how I cut them all out - with my 45/90 degree triangle ruler of course! This HST-filled block is called Whirlpool. The beauty of using a ruler or template to cut out your triangles is that you don't need to trim your unit to size after you've sewn it together. I know you can make multiple half-square triangle blocks at once by sewing squares, rather than…
