The Sanitary Commission, Crimea
Sir Robert Rawlinson and Dr John Sutherland of the Sanitary Commission sent to the Crimea to improve the hygiene conditions in the army camps and hospitals. Rawlinson was injured by the cannon shot seen in the photo. Phitigraph by Roger Fenton

Edwin Clark (1814-1894) born 7 January 1814. Clark was engineer for Robert Stephenson's Britannia tubular bridge over the Menai Straits between Wales and Anglesey. In 1857 he became engineer to the Thames Graving Dock company and using his experience of lifting the Britannia Bridge tubes using hydraulic presses he developed a means of raising boats using similar technology. Clark designed Anderton boat lift to raise boats 15m from the River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey canal, opened 1875

Sir Benjamin Baker - Historic engineering photos, illustrations and drawings
Benjamin Baker (1840-1907) ICE President 1895-96, Replica of portrait presented by Miss M Spagnolitti, Baker’s niece in 1930. Baker was involved in a wide variety of projects including the London Metropolitan Railway, the Forth Railway Bridge and the Aswan Dam in Egypt. He was also a major influence on the foundation of the Engineering Standards Committee, forerunner of the British Standards Institution.

Portrait of Sir Joseph William Bazalgette (1819-91), ICE President 1883-4 by Alessandro Ossani. Chief engineer of London's Metropolitan Board of Works his major achievement was the creation (in response to the "Great Stink" of 1858) of a sewer network for central London. Portrait is held by Institution of Civil Engineers and has been on display at the National Maritime Museum in the Royal River exhibition in 2012.

Joseph Whidbey (1757-1833) Whidbey accompanied Lieutenant George Vancouver on his expedition to survey the Alexander Archipelego off the coast of Alaska in 1791-5. He later worked with John Rennie on the design and construction of the plymouth breakwater, 1811-14. Portrait is held by Institution of Civil Engineers

John Rennie (1761-1821) Rennie was a Scottish engineer responsible for numerous bridges, canals and docks. His works include Lucknow bridge India, Waterloo and Southwark bridges and design for London Bridge, Dundal aqueduct on the Kennet and Avon canal, Rochdale canal, Plymouth breakwater. He also advised Robert Stevenson on the Bell Rock lighthouse.
