The Winter of 1962/63

That winter, the snow started on Boxing Day 1962 and the big freeze lasted until March 1963. Blizzards caused snowdrifts up to six metres deep, telephone lines were brought down and temperatures fell so low the sea froze over. Roads faced similar disruption in 1963, but former policeman Tom Taylor, 68, from Gloucester, said the biggest problem was not a lack of grit - but a relentless, blustering wind. North Bridge Street looking north. On the right is St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church which in May 1906 was opened as the Monkwearmouth Picture Hall by George Black. In 1919 it became the Bromarsh Cinema and in May was destroyed. The chapel was built in 1872 by J. Potts and Son. On the river side is the saw mill of J.W. Wilson.
