Story Map Freebie!

We are starting our unit on Bears! Last week we read many versions of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Part of our work on the story included this story map. It is made for kindergarten students, but would be appropriate for first grade too. They drew pictures to show their ideas and then I labeled the drawing or wrote the dictation about what what happening in each part of the story. First, the kiddos worked on the setting and characters. I love this colorful busy picture that includes all…

This week we began the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. Today I thought I would share a few of the math activities we have been doing. They are obvious ideas but perhaps new in the application in this story! I wanted to take the concepts of "enormous" and "giant" and bring them to life with math. The Giant's Hand and Estimation I had a super large hand photocopied on paper that we estimated how many beans would fit in the palm of the "giant's" hand. Guesses ranged from 4 to 1000. We counted…

Earth Day & Plants

We had a VERY busy week in 1st grade. Our days seem to just be zooming by. At the beginning of the week we celebrated Earth Day. Earth Day was officially last week {April 22}, but we were so busy with all of our Bunny Day activities . . . so our celebration was a little belated. Here’s a little peek at some of the fun things we did! We read lots of books and made a book of our own about ways we can take care of the Earth. We also made these cute little posters to hang up around our house and…

Shannon's Lil' KinderCuties

We started the month off with a mysterious beanstalk sprouting in the middle of our classroom. I have a REALLY hard time just reading the traditional version of Jack and the Beanstalk, because Jack gets away with being lazy and stealing, so....I use the pictures in the book, Look Out, Jack! The Giant Is Back!, to tell a different version. In my version, the giant gets his golden treasures back and the children discover that the only reason the giant seems so grumpy is because he is in…

Jack & the Beanstalk - Story Basket

We've been busy over the last few weeks sorting & planting out our Spring seeds. Amongst our selection of veggie seeds are runner & broad beans. These are great to observe as they grow at an amazing rate, & produce quick results for eager little gardeners. We've been measuring the height of our beans daily & making a note of their progress too. Minnie has found it fascinating to compare beans (like those we planted) next to our growing beanstalks & observe just how quickly they've changed…
