Mental Math Tasks can be great for encouraging student to think quickly, critically and to work in groups. Students take turns being the ‘speaker’ for the group. The teacher draws a math problem stick and students are given an opportunity to answer themselves for refer back to their group for help. This task can be differentiated through strategic groupings and allowing students to ‘bring a friend to phone’ with them to answer. This task is appropriate for students in grade levels 3-5.
