Play!
The universal language of children. 10 minutes a day of playing with your children will make the world of difference to them. It’ll also give you a bit of insight into their world… Play is a great way to introduce new concepts to children – it’s safe to test out potential consequences in a game. “We don’t stop playing because we grow up, we grow up because we stop playing” 🎅🤶🎄🎁🌟 #therapeuticparenting #familyservice #families #jlts #jltsfamilyservices
It’s not personal! Well, it really is…. But in a good way. Safety comes from consistency and predictability – if a child is confident that your response to them won’t be abusive or dangerous, they will feel safe enough to take the risk of playing up. It’s really important that children feel safe enough to take risks – if they don’t take risks, they don’t learn about problem-solving, develop coping strategies, or understand natural consequences. #therapeuticparenting #families #jltsfamilyservices Only Child, Coping Strategies, Consistency, Problem Solving, Dangerous
Kids only kick off with those they trust…

Pick your battles!
There’s huge debate about this phrase…. Picking your battles doesn’t mean ignoring stuff, it means PRIORITISING stuff. #therapy #therapeuticparenting #mentalhealth #familyservice #families #jlts #jltsfamilyservices
Too many choices can be overwhelming at any stage. If a child is already overwhelmed, giving them open-ended choices just adds to their overwhelm. Instead of asking a child, “what do you want to do?”, give them limited choices, “Would you like to watch some TV or read a book?” 🎅🤶🎄🎁🌟 #therapy #therapeuticparenting #familyservice #families #jltsfamilyservices Open Ended, Overwhelmed, Assessment, Books To Read, Choices

That’ll be the issue… Pick one thing to focus on, give it all your energy and commitment, and, when that thing is resolved, move on to the next thing. A collection of small wins gives the same outcome as one big win. Moving goalposts and expectations changes the landscape; safety is the key to enabling change and shifting landscapes can’t feel safe – tsunamis and earthquakes spring to mind… 🎅🤶🎄🎁🌟 #therapy #therapeuticparenting #familyservice #traumainformed #families #jltsfamilyservices Enabling, Pick One, Commitment, Landscapes, Focus

Changing behaviour isn’t a quick process
None of us can flick a switch and behave differently – it usually takes at least six weeks of continually practising a new behaviour for it to become embedded. Consistency is the key – even if it feels like you’re talking to a wall most of the time, it’s really important to keep doing it anyway! Children use ‘checking’ behaviour to be sure that the new behaviour is more beneficial than the old. It’s important to not jump on repeated behaviour or compare then to now.
A dysregulated (not calm) adult CANNOT regulate (calm down) a dysregulated child Children connect to adults, so it’s OUR job (the adult) to be open to that connection None of us feels able to fully connect with somebody who is dysregulated We must invite children to share our calm, rather than invest in their chaos Children will reflect what we give them so if we’re calm, so will they be. Approach the child in the way that you want them to respond – calmly! Child And Child, Calm Down, Investing, Therapy, Chaos
Co-Regulation

Respond, don’t react:
⭐️ All behaviour is communication ⭐️ Behind every behaviour is a feeling or need ⭐️ If we react to the behaviour we miss the feeling or need ⭐️ If we respond to the feeling or need we show the child that we’re interested in them–we want to connect with the human not correct the behaviour ⭐️ Take a moment ⭐️ Take a deep breath ⭐️ Ask yourself “What’s the feeling or need?” ⭐️ Validate the feeling or need FIRST then address the behaviour ⭐️ ALWAYS offer an alternative #therapy #jltsfamilyservices
