Smooth Mornings | Creekside Learning

I grew weary of asking my 6 year old, “Did you brush your teeth?” every morning. I grew even wearier of battling with the 4 year old to do each one of her morning tasks (go potty, get dressed, etc.). So I was looking for a new system. I found some great things on line and in catalogs, but nothing for under $20. Per kid. Twenty dollars. Well, I have 3 kids so I decided to design my own Morning Routine Posters. {This post contains affiliate links.} Plus, I was itching to use my newly acquired…

DIY Counting Activity - Simple & Educational

I wanted to create a fun counting activity for my son today. I realized I could use one of his favorite snacks, Fruit Loops, as part of the activity. Since my son is only two, I figured using a cupcake tray with six spaces would be a great start for number recognition and counting practice. A cupcake tray is also great for holding multiple Fruit Loop counters. I took cupcake liners and placed a number sticker within each liner. I did not want to use a marker so he could reuse and eat the…

Numbers & Counting Sensory Bin

I made this bin out of cotton balls and colorful paper numbers. My son can explore this bin in his own way independently or use it as a number activity. The purpose of the activity is to have my son search through the cotton balls and learn to identify and say each number. I thought it was a great idea to make a number line with the numbers he pulled from the bin to practice number sequencing and to use the cotton balls as counters too. Find numbers in the clouds activity: Use cotton balls…

DIY Alphabet Learning Board

My son is starting to show an interest in learning letters so I created an alphabet board for him. I found the large board shown in the photo at Michaels craft store. I love this board because it is magnetic and dry-erase. I glued flash cards onto the board that I purchased for $1 at Michaels. I also found a great deal at TJ Maxx on the Melissa & Doug magnetic letters shown in the photo. This activity was so easy to create. Typically, I don't like to spend this much money on DIY learning…

Here is an easy and inexpensive way to practice letter recognition and letter building with toddlers! I simply used a dot art marker to write each letter on paper and then poured pom poms into a container. I set this up as an invitation to play for my son. He has always loved playing with pom poms so I figured why not use them to learn the difference between uppercase and lowercase letters. Pom poms always make learning exciting! -Deborah
