On May the 10th and 11th 1941 the Elephant and Castle suffered heavy attacks in the Blitz. Around one third of the built environment was destroyed. The first recorded use of the name "Elephant and Castle" was in 1765. It referred to the pub, once a blacksmiths, that over time lent its name to the entire area.
