05 Jan 42: Airey Neave becomes the first British officer to successfully escape from a German POW camp (Oflag IV-C at Colditz Castle, Germany) disguised in a crafted German uniform. He escapes by walking straight out the front gate and traveling by train and then by foot to Danzig where he slips onto a boat to neutral Sweden. Six weeks later he is flown home to England.
