American swimmer Gertrude Ederle had already won a gold medal and two bronze medals at the 1924 Olympics. On August 6th, 1926 she swam from Cap Gris-Nez, France to Kingsdown, England in 14 hours and 30 minutes.

Gertrude Caroline Ederle was an American competition swimmer, Olympic champion, and former world record-holder. In she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
