In 1900 Portsmouth, in Southern England, had about 800 pubs serving a population of 190,000. Although Portsmouth's population today is 205,000, the number of pubs has shrunk to around 160.

I believe this pub shut down shortly after I had taken this photo, and looking on Google's streetview had been demolished by May 2012 and there now stands new homes on this site which you can see if you click on [[3486697]]
