Raasay Brochel Castle - Isle of Raasay. Raasay Traditionally the home of Clan MacSween, the island was ruled by the MacLeods from the 15th to the 19th century. Raasay means "Isle of the Roe Deer" and is home to an endemic subspecies of Bank Vole.
Brochel Castle, Brochel, Raasay The castle is believed to be late 15th century or early 16th century. However it was only occupied until about 1671, after which is has been slowly crumbling away and continues to do so. In this view, in the foreground, is a homestead or croft, which appeared to be still occupied. There are very few people still living in the north of Raasay.
