Outdoor Learning Grand Opening

“Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” – Rachel Carson What a fabulous day! We are so grateful to all of our families and students who celebrated the grand opening of our outdoor learning yard today! It was wonderful to celebrate our year and spend time together outside. The Little Learners Approach - showing children where to look but not what to see - Reggio approach

We show children where to look but not what to see…This simple phrase has become part of our philosophy, which feeds into our approach and is who we are today as a setting. Our approach was originally inspired by the Reggio Approach, but we have developed and fine-tuned it over the years and we fully expect to continue enhancing and adapting, because no matter how good you think you are, you can always be better. At the end of the day we are providing care and education for children in their…

Kitchen Floor Crafts: Beach Small World Play

Beach Small World Play

This past week we enjoyed exploring beach & ocean activities as part of our Simple Summer Theme series. One thing I've recently been wanting to do more of with the kiddos is small world play. Using the sandbox was a natural idea for beach play, although we also could have set up a small sensory tub for this type of play. Materials: Handful of people toys (we used our Playmobile figurines, we soaked them in soapy water afterwards to get the sand out) Sea shells Plastic sea creatures Floral…

Pebble Sculptures

Inspired by the freestanding stone sculptures that we saw on the rocky beach at Easter (see the photographs at the bottom), the girls and I tried a few tiny pebble sculptures of our own. I brought home a bag full of teeny tiny stones and we heated up the glue gun and got creative. The girls really enjoyed doing this and we displayed them in a tray of sand afterwards. They look so sweet and remind me of a blissful weekend of sea spray and relaxation! These are Faith's..... These are…

Where the Wild Things Are Retell

We read the story "Where the Wild Things Are" today. In order to encourage the children to practice identifying the elements of the story (character, setting) and retelling the story in sequence, we turned our sand table into the book's setting! The children created the characters and setting at our art table. Experimenting with how to make tall trees. Drawing the characters. Referring to the book to double check what the characters and setting looked like. The Wild Things in their treetops…

Stomping in the Mud

At Stomping pretty much everything that we put out for the children is considered a 'loose part'. This means the children have the opportunity to use our things in as many different and creative ways as they can think of. Recently we set out a playscape with spring loaded tongs. The tongs are wonderful for small muscle development, and they are always very appealing to the children. We have two sets of tongs - one wooden and the other metal. The children were having a wonderful time…

Catching and Plotting Rainfall

If you're on Pinterest, you've seen this amazing rain gauge project. The simplicity, short material list, and learning opportunity have made it a favorite among kids and parents for years - my son and I included. To make it you'll need a clear plastic bottle (like a 2-liter soda bottle) or a large water bottle. We used a Smart Water bottle. Remove the label. Have a ruler, scissors, and a permanent fine-tip marker handy. Cut the top of the bottle off with a knife or scissors; young children…

All Around Child-Outside

I have been sharing the wonderful things I saw while visiting All Around Child in Overland Park, KS. So far we have explored the common areas, hallways, and the beautiful classrooms. Now you will get to see the masterpiece that is the outside play areas, but they are so much more than that. They are areas that have been created to encourage exploration, wonder, experiments, and of course fun. See for yourself... This is the glorious butterfly garden that the students have created. The…
