Standing, naked & self-possessed in the patio of her home, in this 1936 painting, Frida Kahlo holds the crimson ribbon that connects her family tree; Mexican to German roots. The picture of her parents is taken from their wedding photo, Her mother was beautiful & bright but Frida rebelled against her Catholicism. She identified with her tender, silent, atheistic father, who'd emigrated to Mexico when he was 19 & suffered from epilepsy.
