Frank Auerbach, "Self Portrait". Note how he has worked over an interesting surface. How can you prepare your working surface before you draw on it?

Frank Auerbach - charcoal and eraser drawing. I like this charcoal drawing as it shows a different range of light and dark tones and shaded in the portrait. I like how the artist has smudged and take away parts in the face to bring out the emotions in the person itself.

Frank Auerbach - charcoal and eraser drawing. Auerbach used to create layer upon layer of medium on his drawings. At the exhibition at the Tate that I recently visited, a layer of the paper had literally worn away where he had been erasing the detail.
