A Bank of Max For Live Oscillators - revisited

When I created BankOSCmr0v01, I thought that it was quite a neat, simple multi-oscillator sound generator, and so I released it into the wild... After a bug report, followed by careful investigations by myself, Ableton and Cycling'74, it looks like we could not reliably generate the problem, and so I went back to playing with it and seeing where this took me - which is where it started to get really interesting... The problem with large numbers of oscillators is always one of control…

Slow fades in live performance...

3rd Hand was inspired by a ‘drone’ concert that I attended. The opening ‘build’ took about 10 minutes, and was astonishingly effective - there’s something about a big sound that starts out quiet and gradually gets louder and louder! So I wondered how to do this in Ableton Live, and 3rd Hand is the result… 3rd Hand is a timed volume control. You press the ‘Up’ button and the volume goes up. You press the ‘Down’ button and the volume goes down. If you change your mind, then pressing the button…

Generating audio soundscapes...

A few weeks back, I revisited my old Reaktor workspace and started reworking some of the ideas in there for M4L. Here's the second output from that project... Saw4Generator_Dark is a sound generator with preset memories. It does not respond to MIDI inputs - it just sits there and makes noises continually... The basic idea is very simple. There are two sections: a sound generator that produces the raw sounds; and a mix processor that controls how those sounds are formed into a stereo sound…

DIY MIDI Controller with LEDs

Possibly one of the least amazing titles for a blog articles! In these days where RGB LEDs feature on just about every specification list for MIDI Controllers, then the only difference is that it's a simple home-brew MIDI Controller - creatively mis-using a spare numeric keypad. The numeric keypad is intended to be used with laptops that don't have separate number keys in a nice neat square form, and require the user to either use the buttons over the 'qwerty' row, or to do various extra…

Forums and Groups are interesting places to lurk. If you ignore the incessantly repeated questions and the obvious trolling, then you occasionally get a query from someone who wants to do something unusual and interesting, and can't see how to achieve it. Recently, just such an enquiry turned up on on one of the popular synthesizer forums, and here, belatedly, is a response. The enquirer asked about how to make a movement-sensing MIDI controller more predictable or repeatable. If you have…

An 'Extreme' Multiplying LFO for MaxforLive

LFOLFO is an experimental 'Multiplying' LFO. It is based on the idea that being able to switch the range of an LFO can be used to generate a number of interesting audio effects, and so the design is optimised to enable easy control of the Rate and Multiply controls. The prototype was produced as a response to a question posed by Russell Alderton on the 'Max For Live Users' Group on Facebook, and it has undergone extensive development since then. The Rate (Frequency) of the LFO can be…

Or visit: https://soundcloud.com/.../sine-square-saw-rect-pad-examples For some time, I've been wondering about doing single page summaries of sounds, and a conversation on a forum persuaded me to do something about it. My first visit to a Bank of Oscillators...

I have always been fascinated by sound generators. Over the years, I have done a lot of dabbling into FM, AM, Ring Modulation, Granular, FFTs and many other techniques, and what I have found is that the interesting stuff is often in the detail. So my previous forays into Reaktor produced large numbers of generators exploring lots of ideas, and I sometimes reach back into that abandoned era to provide inspiration for MaxForLive devices. This brings me to my latest sound generator, whose name…

On the Discord channel of the Music Hackspace, @MeLlamanHokage asked about simulating power failure in a circuit using Max. I replied: For audio circuitry then you would need to implement things like: a low-pass filter with a falling cut-off frequency, an increasing noise floor, rising (or falling) gain, falling clipping levels (eventually to zero volts), rising intermodulation distortion, a changing dc offset... (Here's a sneak peak of what was in my head - scroll down for more details)…
