An Orchid pattern by Steve Plummer
The illusion is based on a work by Russian artist Lodygin Sergey Pavlovich, (1893 - 1961). There is very little information about him. In his early years he drew for magazines and advertisements and seems to have been involved in political drawings at the time of the Russian Revolution. Later he had his own graphic studio and was also a theatre designer.
The illusion is based on a painting of Sappho by Auguste Charles Mengin. It was painted in 1877 and is now in Manchester Art Gallery. Sappho was a Greek poet who lived around 600BC. She threw herself into the sea because of unrequited love, still holding her lyre.
Liberty Illusion pattern by Steve Plummer
It would be nice to knit an illusion of the whole of the Statue of Liberty but, to show the amount of detail needed, it would be enormous so I settled for just representing the head.
