Prior to German reunification in 1989, East Germany and West Germany had different green men on their traffic lights. In East Germany Ampelmännchen was a hugely popular cultural figure, appearing in comic books and children's cartoons. When the Berlin wall fell, there was a plan to make all green lights in Germany the same as the West Germany man but East Germans launched a campaign to save their Ampelmännchen. Their Ampelmännchen remains on East German traffic lights and also appears in some western districts of Berlin. The Ampelmännchen is a beloved symbol in Eastern Germany, "enjoying the privileged status of being one of the few features of communist East Germany to have survived the end of the Iron Curtain with his popularity unscathed.
