1. We split our children into 4 general ability 'challenge groups'. Ours are Elmer, The Gruffalo, The Hungry Caterpilllar & Mog the Cat, with each group having a clearly visible poster with each child's name on, so they can check which group they're in at any time. There will be a challenge for each group each day - the children just need to look for their group picture to find their own daily challenge. Was on a course with Alistair from ABC DOES last week, & he talked to us about this classroom. 2. Each activity has a talk button which the children press to find out what the challenge is. The idea is that the children can then complete this challenge independently, with each activity being specifically chosen to target an area of learning that we are currently focussing on. We find that the children need reminding to find their own challenge each day, but are then happy to sit alone and concentrate on the activity once they are there, and feel a great sense of pride on completion!

Today you can define mental math in various different ways. Continuous Provision Year 1, Math Games, Maths, Challenge Cards, Challenge Ideas, Eyfs, Book Crafts, Pre School, Literacy

3. Each child has their own challenge book which they will find in a basket next to their activity. When they've completed the activity they find an adult to check what they've done and sign off their book. (We always have one adult floating/doing challenges). Support can be given to complete the challenges where needed but this is then reflected in our marking criteria as seen in the next picture.
