Anti-intellettuale, per nulla curioso e decisamente reazionario («Ah, io adoro la Thatcher»), Larkin era un anti-poeta. Non voleva mai fare niente né andare da nessuna parte. «Non sono mai stato in America, o da nessun’altra parte, se è per questo». Un intervistatore una volta gli chiese se gli sarebbe piaciuto visitare, per esempio, la Cina, e lui rispose: «Non mi dispiacerebbe vedere la Cina se potessi tornare in giornata».
