Mexican Cigar - Cuphea ignea. The Cigar Plant, Cuphea ignea, and its relative the Mexican Cigar, C. micropetala, are rather delicate, even in all but the most southern areas of the United States. Some hummingbird gardeners keep them in greenhouses all winter, bringing them out as container plants after the danger of frost has passed. Flowers of Cigar Plant are red and tubular (as pictured above); those of Mexican Cigar are yellow to orange with red tips.
Dragon Wing Red Begonia. It really is a super amazing easy to grow plant! I have a 16" pot with 3 plants in it and it is huge with clumps of red flowers everywhere. I've even seen hummingbirds hover and stare at the flowers wishing they could get some nectar from it (but they can't). My red dragon wing begonia signals the hummingbirds to stop by and my feeder rewards them!
Mountain Rosebay or Catawba Rhododendron is a large native shrub with thick green leaves that provide a fine backdrop for a Hummingbird Garden at any season. In late spring, the plant puts forth large clusters of purplish-pink flowers that attract the attention of hummingbirds AND humans. It's always a treat to see a Ruby-throated Hummingbird spending several minutes probing the rhododendron's blossoms for nectar.
