The steps leading up to the Berghof from the main driveway, in wintertime. On the second floor, Hitler's bedroom windows are open; the bathrooms and Eva Braun’s bedroom are shuttered.

Thousands of local residents and people further afield, paraded daily past the Berghof during the late afternoon hours. They were hoping to catch a glimpse of the Führer, and the Führer regularly obliged by waving from his terrace. There was no hysterics here, just a solemn extended arm from the passing crowd as they strolled by. Some of the children shouted Hëil Hitler, and even breached the gates and fence. SS Staff were instructed to allow the children this freedom, and at times, Der…
