This is a false color image of a transmission electron micrograph of a synapse. The bright pink areas color neurons. The presynaptic neuron (left side) sends signals to the postsynaptic neuron (right) by releasing neurotransmitters that have been packaged into vesicles (The small blue circles within the pink-colored presynaptic neuron).  Mitochondria, which provide energy to cells, are colored yellow.
