Fort Wainwright, Alaska 172nd Infantry Brigade deployed to Mosul, Iraq in August 2005. The Brigade deployment was to have ended July 27, 2006, but President, George Bush unexpectedly extended the deployment to November and ordered the unit to Baghdad to quell growing sectarian violence. The extension happened after some of units of the Brigade had already touched down at home base, Fort Wainwright, AK, forcing them to fly back to Iraq.
