TVA started building dams in southern Appalachia in the 30's to provide electricity to rural citizens. Judson was a town that now lies at the bottom of Fontana Lake. In 1942 TVA began construction on Fontana Dam-the highest concrete dam east of the Rockies. Many families had to leave their homes to make way for the lake that resulted from the dam. When TVA pulls the water level down in winter, one can see foundations of homes/business still existing, buried under the water all these years.
