Eddie Aikau: the History of a Legend  LIFEGUARD (ke kia'i ola) In 1967, Eddie became the first lifeguard at Waimea Bay. Clyde joined him in 1969. They worked there together for 10 years up until 1978 when Eddie set out on the voyage of Hokulea. They never lost one person in 10 years - no jet ski, no zodiac, just two brothers with a board and swim fins.

Ocean Elder Nainoa Thompson: Executive Director of the Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS). Since 1976, he has played an integral part in the design, construction, sailing, and navigating of the double-hulled voyaging canoe, Hokule’a. Nainoa studied non-instrument navigation, or wayfinding, under master navigator Mau Piailug of Satawal, Micronesia. Thompson is the first Hawaiian to practice the art of wayfinding on long distance ocean voyages since such voyaging ended around the 14th century.
